WinUAE A1200 With Hard Drive Setup part 2
After completing Part 1 of this guide, you should now see the Workbench desktop.
Formatting the Hard Drives
1. Select the drive to be formatted (i.e. DH0:NDOS).
2. Hold down the right mouse button on the Workbench menu, go to Icons → Format Disk, then release the mouse button.
3. Name the volume.
4. Enable the desired drive options (see table).
5. Click Quick Format. Confirm the warnings by clicking Format two more times.
- If you enable Directory Cache, International Mode will also be enabled and cannot be turned off. This is normal, as DirCache depends on International Mode.
| Device | Volume Name | Put Trashcan | Fast File System | Directory Cache |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| DH0 | WB | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| DH1 | Apps | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| DH2 | Games | No | Yes | No |
- Repeat steps 1 to 5 for each remaining drive.
Installing Workbench 3.x
With the drives now prepared, the Workbench installation can begin.
1. Double-click the Install3.x disk.
2. Double-click the Install folder.
3. Double-click English (or your chosen language).
Workbench Preferences
4. Click Proceed on the information window.
5. Click Install Release 3 to do a complete installation.
6. Use the default Novice User - All Actions Automatic and click Proceed With Install.
7. Select desired languages to install and click Proceed.
8. If no printer is required, click Proceed.
- Printers can be set up in the IO ports tab. The most common options are Epson Matrix and PostScript.
9. Select keymap to be installed and click Proceed.
Disk Swap
Workbench will now start installing. When the installer requests additional disks:
10. Press F12, go to the Disk swapper tab and insert disks 5 and 6 instead of disks 2 and 3.
11. Click OK in WinUAE. Installation will automatically continue in Workbench.
Install Complete
When the installation reaches 100%, complete the following steps.
1. Press F12 and eject all disks using the Disk swapper by clicking on the drive letters.
2. Click Remove all to remove all disks from the Disk Swapper.
3. Go to Floppy drives and disable (untick) all drives except DF0.
- The blank disk created earlier can be inserted into DF0 to avoid empty drive sound.
4. Click OK in WinUAE.
Enabling additional floppy drives (DF1, DF2, DF3) increases Chip RAM usage because AmigaOS reserves memory for drive buffers and disk management.
| Floppy Drive | Additional RAM Usage (Chip RAM) |
|---|---|
| DF0 (Main Drive) | ~11KB (Required) |
| DF1 Enabled | ~11KB |
| DF2 Enabled | ~11KB |
| DF3 Enabled | ~11KB |
- Total impact with all four drives enabled: ~33KB of Chip RAM in addition to system requirements.
5. Click Proceed in Workbench.
When the system reboots, Workbench will be installed on the hard drive.
Working System
Congratulations! The system is set up with an Amiga 1200 and Workbench installed on the hard drive.
Optionally, follow the WinUAE WHDLoad Setup guide to set up WHDLoad.
